MATH NIGHT

We (Mrs. Moon and approximately 30 Global High students) worked with local elementary students and their parents to spark interest in engineering by leading a session, "Elementary Engineers", at  Shackelford Elementary's Math Night.  We introduced engineering and then took turns presenting fun facts about engineering marvels. The session concluded with a straw tower building contest!

PUZZLE CUBE PROJECT

Our first project is to design, sketch, and build a puzzle cube.  Following the constraints outlined in our Design Brief and completing each phase of the Design Process, we are sure to have the best designs in the end!  We are now in our final stages of this project - creating detailed sketches on Inventor and actually building our puzzles out of wooden cubes.  This project ROCKS!

JEWELRY DESIGN CONTEST AND AUCTION

Our local jewelry store, Wiley's Jewelry, recently helped us raise money for a 3D printer.  We first conducted a contest between our students for the best jewelry design based on multiview drawings they sketched. The top two designs selected were created by Alex Reisner (ring) and Mattea Ingram (pendant).  Then, Wiley's Jewelry recreated these designs using their 3D software, formed wax molds for the unique pieces, made them, and held a silent auction.  * Click here to see the related newspaper article, Engineering A Work of Art.

Global High POWERED UP AGAINST CANCER!  On May 15th, over 40 Global High members (staff and students) participated in Ellis County's Relay for Life walk!  In total, Global raised $1,840 for the American Cancer Society.  A big thanks to everyone that helped us "power up" against cancer!

TSA State Contest (Waco, TX) - Congratulations, Rylee Werchan for placing "Best in State" in Imaging Technology and to Will Porter and Loren Page for placing 2nd in Debating Technological Issues!  These students will compete at nationals in Denver, Colorado at the end of June.

Engineers Week 2009

NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK (eweek) WAS  FEBRUARY 15 - 22, AND WE HAD A BLAST!
We would like to thank Howard Eighth Grade Center for  allowing us to display our engineering projects and hand out brochures and flyers on their campus this past week.  In addition, a big thanks goes out to all the local businesses that passed out flyers for us and allowed us to hang posters that promoted eweek.  We would also like to express our gratitude to the Waxahachie Daily Light for publishing our students' engineering essays over the past two weeks.  Our biggest event during eweek was a community wide hands-on workshop, "Engineering in Action, for 1st - 8th graders.  Approximately 80 kids plus their parents showed up to learn more about engineering and to design, build, and test newspaper boats! I want to thank our PTO team for providing cookies and juice for the participants, the administrators and teachers at Global High for running the registration table and providing tours, and I especially want to thank my wonderful students that did a

Thank you, Huckabee, for helping us turn our designs into creations!

Global High was awarded $10,000 from the Huckabee Community Excellence Fund to help fund a 3D printer for our engineering program.  Last year, we received $4,392 from them for the 3D printer, and we raised   $ 700 from student designed jewelry that Wiley's Jewelry created for us.  In addition, we received a personal donation of $100 for our 3D printer.

n excellent job preparing for this workshop and leading the design challenges.
